Firematic Examinations

Occustar provides comprehensive firefighter medical examinations designed for volunteer and career departments. Our program follows a two-part structure: medical qualification and performance-based fitness expectations, as outlined in our Medical and Performance Qualification guidance. Most examinations are delivered onsite to maximize convenience, though all services are also available in our Buffalo office.

Each firematic examination includes a hands-on medical evaluation, vitals, vision and hearing screening, and pulmonary function testing. These components support respiratory health monitoring and ensure members meet role-specific expectations for interior SCBA operations, exterior firefighting, and support functions.

Bloodwork, EKGs, and PSA testing are optional add-ons that enhance surveillance when departments wish to monitor long-term trends. These provide early indication of metabolic, cardiovascular, or general health changes relevant to high-risk operational roles.

Fit-testing is available using the OSHA-approved stannic chloride qualitative method, with quantitative PortaCount testing offered when required. Departments can choose the method that best fits their respiratory program requirements.

All documentation is structured to meet OSHA’s requirement to retain medical surveillance records for the duration of employment plus 30 years. Group exams are assembled into clearly organized binders to ensure easy long-term retrieval and full compliance during audits or regulatory review.

This exam structure is practical, compliant, and built to support firefighter readiness and safety.
